Our oldest daughter is Theadocia, or Tedi. She is 20 years old and is a gifted artist. She paints, quilts, sews, scrapbooks, pours and fires her own ceramics, works with stained glass, and now glass blowing. She is locally known for her work with glass. She has been creating with glass since she was about 4, progressing from mosaics to fusing glass at age 6 ½, and starting glass blowing when she was only 15. Tedi makes gorgeous fused glass necklaces, many of which she donates to Autism related and other charities. Recently, Tedi draws her own comic book characters to expand her love of superheroes. She wants to draw her own comic strip that will showcase superheros on the Autism spectrum. She is also illustrating her very first children’s book. She has taken over the garage as her art studio where she shares her love of art with others. Tedi is a straight A student and loved attending an Art-focused High School. (Remember the TV show “Fame?” Her school was just like that!) Tedi just finished her freshman year at College for Creative Studies, where she is studying furniture design and glass blowing. She has just added wood working and metal work to her list of favorite things, and soon will be adding blacksmithing as well. We are so proud that Tedi never lets her Asperger’s Syndrome keep her from her goals and dreams.
Following her dreams of becoming a glass blower. For those that have known Tedi since she was little understand what a HUGE step this is for her. At a young age Tedi was super affected by her Autism, being completely non-verbal and trapped in her own world until she was 5. Tedi attended an Autism center-based school, followed by special ed classes, speech therapy, and many modifications to help her be successful. Once Mom introduced Art Therpay, life would never be the same. Tedi started to talk and function more independently. She started watching local glass blowers and fell in love with the artform. At a kindergarten school assembly, each child had to walk up to the microphone and express “what they wanted to be when they grew up.” Instead of following her peers who dreamed of being basketball stars, and the next singer or supermodel, our little girl walked up and said she wanted to be a glassblower when she grew up. Over the next few years, Tedi worked with stained glass and fusing glass, gearing up for glass blowing. Tedi remains a shy and quiet person,…until she is asked about any of her favorite art forms. Her eyes will brighten and she will come out of her shell to share her love of art.
